An online toll payment solution has been developed to address the weaknesses of traditional systems by immediately processing payments made with Europay, Mastercard, and Visa, or EMV, credit or debit microchip cards using an online process.

The solution from FNB allows users to keep cards or payment devices in their possession during payment, which helps enhance security and reduces the possibility of fraud.

Traditional toll road payment methods have been found to be inconvenient for motorists and are vulnerable to abuse and fraud. These methods also make it difficult to detect lost, stolen or cancelled cards, and the cards are vulnerable to cloning – leading to fraud and financial losses.

“By replacing outdated, fraud-prone systems with secure, real-time payment processing, we’ve not only enhanced convenience for motorists but also achieved a dramatic reduction in card-related fraud. This is a win for all stakeholders in the toll payment ecosystem — and it’s just the beginning. We’re excited to continue rolling out this solution nationwide in 2025,” says FNB product and solutions head Netsai Ngidi.

FNB says the solution has resulted in immediate benefits for toll concessionaires, card issuers, toll acquirers, and cardholders. The company aims to expand the solution to additional toll road concessionaires throughout the year.
